What score do you need on the Fire Protection PE Exam?

There is no single published passing percentage for the Fire Protection PE exam. NCEES uses a psychometric process to set the passing standard against the performance of minimally-competent practicing engineers, so the exact number of correct answers needed can vary from administration to administration.

There Is No Fixed 70%

The cut score is calibrated, not fixed. Chasing an exact percentage is less useful than consistently answering more questions correctly across every topic.

Aim High in Practice

On timed practice exams, a score comfortably in the mid-70s or above is a reasonable readiness target — it leaves margin for exam-day nerves and harder question sets.

Balance Across Topics

Because the topics are weighted, broad competence beats a single strong area. Use practice exams to find and shore up your weakest topics.
