Water-Based Fire Protection Systems

12 - 18 questions — the largest single topic

Water-Based Fire Protection Systems are the largest topic on the exam, at roughly 12 to 18 questions, and lean heavily on NFPA 13 and NFPA 20. This is where hydraulic calculations, sprinkler design and fire pumps all live. Section 6 of the Fire Protection PE Textbook gives this topic the depth its weighting deserves.

What the Textbook Covers: Water-Based Systems

The NCEES specification lists four sub-areas:

System Selection

Wet pipe, dry pipe, preaction, deluge, water mist, standpipes and water spray — and when each is appropriate.

Design Criteria

Water supply, design density and design area, pressure requirements, occupancy hazard classification and hose stream demand.

Principal Components

Sprinklers (K-factor, orientation, response), fire pumps, water storage and valves.

Calculations

Hydraulic calculations, equipment sizing, and hanger/support requirements.

A Taste: Sprinkler Discharge and the Density/Area Method

A sprinkler’s flow follows Q = K√P, where K is the orifice coefficient and P is the pressure at the sprinkler. Using the density/area method, a light-hazard occupancy might require a design density of 0.10 gpm/ft² over the hydraulically most-remote 1,500 ft² design area — so the base demand is 0.10 × 1,500 = 150 gpm before hose stream and friction losses are added.
