8 - 12 questions on the Fire Protection PE Exam

Passive and Structural Fire Protection is the “built-in” side of fire protection — the walls, floors, assemblies and firestopping that contain a fire without any moving parts — and is worth about 8 to 12 questions. It draws on the building code and NFPA 101. Section 8 of the Fire Protection PE Textbook connects fire-resistance ratings to real assemblies.

What the Textbook Covers: Passive & Structural

The NCEES specification lists four sub-areas:

Building Materials

Fire-resistance ratings, standard fire-test methods, and assessing the fire performance of materials.

Building Geometry & Compartmentalization

Construction types, height and area limits, and how compartmentation limits fire spread.

Structural Fire Protection

Fire-resistance equivalency, alternate protection approaches, and char/heat-transfer behavior of structural members.

Protection of Openings & Penetrations

Fire dampers, fire doors and windows, and through-penetration firestopping.

A Taste: Fire-Resistance Ratings

Assemblies are rated in hours (e.g., 1-hour, 2-hour, 3-hour) based on standard furnace testing. A rated barrier is only as good as its weakest opening, so a fire wall is paired with rated doors, dampers and firestopping that must carry a compatible rating. Much of this topic is knowing how the building code and NFPA 101 assign and protect those ratings.
