9 - 14 questions on the Fire Protection PE Exam

Human Behavior and Evacuation ties fire protection back to the people in the building and is worth about 9 to 14 questions, governed largely by NFPA 101. It spans prescriptive egress design, performance-based (timed) egress, and how occupants actually respond to fire. Section 9 of the Fire Protection PE Textbook covers all three.

What the Textbook Covers: Human Behavior & Evacuation

The NCEES specification lists three sub-areas:

Prescriptive Egress & Life Safety Design

Occupant-load calculations, egress arrangement and sizing, components, egress lighting and illumination, and exit signage and pathway marking.

Performance-Based Egress

Evacuation time (ASET vs. RSET), egress scenarios and occupant density.

Psychological & Physiological Response

Tenability limits, pre-movement time, and occupant decision-making during a fire.

A Taste: Occupant Load and Egress Capacity

Prescriptive egress starts with occupant load — floor area divided by the occupant-load factor for the use (people = area / OLF). Required egress width then follows from a capacity factor per occupant (for example, about 0.2 in./person for stairs and 0.15 in./person for level components under NFPA 101). Performance-based design instead compares the time available before conditions become untenable (ASET) with the time required to evacuate (RSET).
