The NCEES specification lists three sub-areas:
Occupant-load calculations, egress arrangement and sizing, components, egress lighting and illumination, and exit signage and pathway marking.
Evacuation time (ASET vs. RSET), egress scenarios and occupant density.
Tenability limits, pre-movement time, and occupant decision-making during a fire.
Prescriptive egress starts with occupant load — floor area divided by the occupant-load factor for the use (people = area / OLF). Required egress width then follows from a capacity factor per occupant (for example, about 0.2 in./person for stairs and 0.15 in./person for level components under NFPA 101). Performance-based design instead compares the time available before conditions become untenable (ASET) with the time required to evacuate (RSET).
The textbook works occupant-load and egress-capacity problems and introduces the ASET/RSET framework used in timed-egress questions.
