The NCEES specification lists four sub-areas:
Addressable systems, emergency communication systems (ECS), releasing service, mass notification, and emergency responder communication.
Device location and spacing, system interfaces, and the sequence of operations.
Selecting initiating devices, notification appliances, control units and power supplies.
Voltage drop, secondary (battery) supply sizing, notification coverage, and detector response.
NFPA 72 requires a secondary power supply that can run the system in standby for a required period (commonly 24 hours) and then drive it in alarm for several minutes. You sum the standby current over the standby hours and the alarm current over the alarm minutes (in amp-hours), apply a derating/safety factor, and size the battery accordingly.
