A Taste: Secondary Power (Battery) Sizing

NFPA 72 requires a secondary power supply that can run the system in standby for a required period (commonly 24 hours) and then drive it in alarm for several minutes. You sum the standby current over the standby hours and the alarm current over the alarm minutes (in amp-hours), apply a derating/safety factor, and size the battery accordingly.
